From the block to blockchain—Future Plans MC After dwelling on the culture’s history and your past, let’s turn around and look ahead. What are your plans for 2022? CM This year is our 20th anniversary of my brand Claw Money. We are doing 12 collaborations with only women-owned brands and artists. Some of the names I can reveal? We’re doing a solid Gold Claw Subway token with Julie Lamb. I’m working with one of my first hires, my old assistant and favorite collaborator, who’s a tremendous fashion stylist, Haley Wollens, and we’re making some repurposed vintage rugbys. We’re doing this like slow reveal each month, so it will be a surprise. I’m trying to put on a lot of friends and many young women and get some eyes on them. We’re also moving into the NFT space. I have twenty-five years of digital art that I have been sitting on, and I didn’t really know what I was going to do with it. NFTs have allowed me to revisit all of that work and refocus. I’m excited about it. Somehow it really goes against all my art principles. I’m ↑ Never not ballin’! A Knicks-themed colorway shows Claws’ love for her hometown. trying to get acclimated with the whole idea of the metaverse. Usually, I do art in public art, right? Graffiti, street art, whatever you want to call—murals. I give them to the public for free, even if someone’s or some brand is paying for it. It’s free for the viewer. You can take a picture beside it. Interact with it. It’s for you. To me, a digital file being owned by someone is very odd. But I am committed to figuring all this out. This is another space where women are few. So, of course, I want to change that. I’m also going to open an all- women’s marketplace in the NFT space to give many young women -Graffiti artists in particular- opportunities often overlooked in these very male spaces. MC Sounds like a good move, both for business and empowerment. My life’s work is about mentorship and helping people, shining the light on people that need it. To me, that’s more important than anything else that I really do. When they shine, I shine. And it’s the thing that is the most gratifying to me. I learned from graffiti that I could challenge myself and step up and rise to the occasion. Graffiti taught me all of those things that I use as my core brand DNA. I owe everything to graffiti, despite not what I do now. MC Ok, I understand you do not like being labeled. If anything, what would you call yourself—a facilitator? CM I’m a connector, I’m a manager, I’m a helper, I’m a mother. Everybody calls me mom because we all need someone who looks out for you and gives you straight talk in your career or life choices. It’s essential. And I find many women don’t have a support system or feel 48 Artist in focus / Interview CLAWMONEY
unprotected. So, if I can offer them that, that’s a huge thing, just knowing someone is there for you. MC Actually, I think that is quite outstanding because writers are used to dealing with the negativity within the scene. So you are challenging the status quo? I think it’s unique. CM Well, I think that this is what women do, and they just haven’t done it in graffiti, and now it’s being done, and it can only be positive.
